Homemade Sushi : Sushi Rice, Tuna Rolls and California Rolls September 10, 2005
One of my favorite foods is sushi! It's good stuff, and very healthy too. I've always wanted to try to make some and finally got around to making some recently.
It's not too hard to make, and I think my first attempt turned out pretty good. It's also fun stuff to 'roll your own', and the supplies needed are pretty simple. A bamboo mat to roll with is only $2.00 bucks, and the rest of what you need (other than the ingredients) you probably already have in your kitchen.
The main ingredient in most sushi is the sushi rice. So the first recipe you'll want to check out is the sushi rice page. Sushi rice is not like your usual long grain American dinner rice, and this page will show you the right kind of rice to buy and how to prepare it with some rice vinegar and sugar to make it sticky.
Tuna rolls are probably the easiest of the sushi rolls to prepare. So after you have your sushi rice prepared this is probably the first type of roll you'll want to try to make. It's easy and requires only a ½ sheet of nori (seaweed), some good quality raw tuna, and sushi rice. Each roll makes 6 pieces.
America's favorite sushi is the California Roll. It might be popular because it contains
no raw fish? I love them because of the different tastes and textures, a little crunch is good! They're a little more complex to make, but still easy. In addition to the usual crab meat, avacado and cucumber I also add some cream cheese. I don't think anything makes a sushi roll better than a little cream cheese!
